Tracking daily habits can be tricky but with the help of an accountability partner, you can reach your goals.

In this case study, I’ve completed the UX research and design for a habit tracking app concept that tracks the daily habits of users, helping them reach their personal goals individually or with the help of a partner.

The Intro

In this case study, I’ve completed the UX research and product design for a habit tracking app concept. The Duo app records the daily habits of users, helping them reach their personal goals individually or with the help of a partner.

Research Plan

I conducted interviews to learn what users are looking for in habit-tracking apps.

ScriptPhoto.png

"I used the Apple health app and it's missing the ability to set daily goals every week."

"I'd love the ability to visually track progress. My app doesn't allow visual uploads to see the results of my healthy habits."

Interviews

Direct quotes from user interviews

"I hate having to input a lot of my info manually. There should be a way to scan my data or sync it somehow into the app."

"I'd like for apps to include career and lifestyle information. A lot of info is generalized, like 'the average person should take 10,000 steps a day,' rule for example. If we can include more personal info, then the app should be able to generate healthy suggestions for individuals."

"I'd like to be able to add family history and DNA information since some things are hereditary."

Feature Prioritization

Boost incentives

The Apple fitness app offers awards, but how can we improve them?

Social features

You can currently share with people in your network, but can we expand?

Medical history

Medical history can be added into your data. What can we do to improve how you track medical history?

What are the key functions?

23.png
  • It tracks habits.

    • You can track your health & fitness habits daily, weekly, and monthly.

  • Keeps record of progress

    • Data is tracked and photos can be uploaded as an additional measure of progress.

  • Can add habits from multiple categories

    • Daily steps, weight loss, stretching are only a few of the options of a habit that can be tracked.

  • Tracks progress with partners and new network

    • If your friends and family aren't available, you can find someone new with similar goals.

  • Incentives for reaching goals

    • Once you reach your goals, you win tokens that can be used for cool rewards.

Challenge

There are already plenty of habit tracking apps. What makes Duo different?

How might we

How might we

keep users feeling both encouraged and engaged?

help users track weekly progress?

How might we

How might we

appeal to users who want to encourage family & friends to reach goals?

connect users outside of their network?

Ideation

My ideation process consisted of defining task flows before creating rough draft sketches of what the app looks like while completing a simple task

Sketches

After defining task flows, I flesh out the idea with some really rough sketches that show each screen for each step.

Lo-fi wireframing

I then took my sketches into figma and began the process of designing low fidelity wireframes.

Hi-fi wireframing

The final step of my design process was to add the Duo app's brand identity and create a mockup of the high-fidelity wireframes to show what the Duo app would look like in action.

Prototype testing

I wanted to prioritize specific features that I learned were important to users during my research.

Task 1: Exploring Social feature

In this task, the user is logging into the Duo app to explore the social feature that would allow them to view other available users to partner with and earn Duo tokens.

If they are interested in partnering with someone within their personal network, they can choose to invite a friend to join the app.

Task 2: Exploring Family History feature

In this task, the user is logging into the Duo app to explore the family history feature that allows them to upload family members manually, or add them if they have accounts with Duo.

The family members can opt-in to sharing their medical info with other members of their family so patterns can be revealed. For example, if asthma is common in your family, it will be shown in the pattern section.

Task 3: Adding a new goal

In this task, the user is logging into the Duo app to add a new goal. After adding the goal, it becomes tracked and the user has the option to add an accountability partner, or reach their goal solo.
